Menorca, Spain

Overview:

Menorca photo Ever popular with couples and families who enjoy a gentle pace of life on holiday, Menorca is a largely rural, pretty island blessed with some of the best beaches and cleanest water in the Mediterranean. It was a British colony in the 18th century and this influence is still noticeable in the Georgian architecture of Mahon and Ciutadella. Even more interesting are the extraordinary stone structures 'talayots, and 'taulas' dating from 1000BC, although to this day no-one knows why they were built. There is a dramatic difference between the rugged northern coast with its small, undiscovered coves and the more developed south, with its superb sandy beaches. Mahon, the capital, lies on the East coast, with a dramatic harbour and many fine restaurants along its lively waterfront. Ciutadella on the West coast is the ancient capital and has many fine historic buildings and squares, as well as a pretty harbour. North of Ciutadella lies Cala Morell, a quiet resort with a sandy cove and an excellent base for exploring the many unspoiled beaches nearby (not all are accessible by car). Cala en Brut is just 3kms from Ciutadella and is a residential resort close to the livelier Cala'n Forcat, where there are excellent facilities for families and children. On the South coast, Cala Galdana is a stunning horseshoe bay with turquoise waters and a family atmosphere, whilst Son Bou has a magnificent sandy beach and a relaxing ambience. Binibeca has won many awards for its architecture and has good amenities as well as being just 15 minutes' drive from Mahon.

Getting Around:

Buses, taxis, rental cars, and private shuttles are all readily available. Many visitors also choose to travel on foot in Ciudadela's downtown areas in order to visit its many shops and attractions. Taxis are available in hotels and at taxi stands located around the city. Ciudadela's city transportation page has taxi company phone numbers and information. Several car rental companies also do business on Minorca, all have offices at Minorca Airport. During the summer months cars go very quickly, so if you want to rent a car then be sure to make reservations well in advance. Minorca has a public bus system which is considered modern and reliable. Private buses and minivans are also available for hire on the island from a local transportation company
